The Huffington Post recently published an article called “Secrets of the Extremely Fit.” I have to admit that this particular article caught my eye because one of my goals for 2014 is to begin a quest to become one of the fittest men on the planet (I’m not kidding!). I personally plan on doing this by competing in a series of difficult events around the globe, including obstacle races such as the Spartan Race, adventure races like the North Idaho Challenge, off-road triathlons like XTerra, and even competitions involving strength and power like CrossFit.

So I read the article and it basically recommended the following:

  • Eat nutrient-dense foods.
  • Eat leafy greens.
  • Get more Vitamin D.
  • Spread protein throughout the day.
  • Eat whey protein.
  • Do full body, multi-joint exercises.
  • Do “new” exercises.
  • Learn how to do pull-ups and do lots of them.
  • Lift heavier weights.
  • Train your core.

This advice is just about spot-on! But I can’t resist throwing in my two cents. So if I were you and I wanted to get extremely fit, I’d go ahead and heed these tips, with two slight modifications:

  1. Some people are allergic to whey. Keep your options open when it comes to protein powder, and consider alternate sources such as pea, rice, and hemp protein powders.

  2. Include High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). To be fit, you body has to be forced to “run from a lion” every now and again. Here’s an episode to get you started with HIIT.
