I’m not sure why lemons have gotten such a bad rap.

When we say “life hands you lemons” we mean something negative happened. When you have a problem car, it’s called a lemon. Why all the negativity towards lemons?

Lemons are amazing! Not only is the acidic property of a lemon good for your health, but lemons themselves are a powerful cleaner, deodorizer, and anti-bacterial agent. Just check out my episode on How to Use Lemons to Clean Your Home.

But besides getting your home sparkly clean without the toxic chemicals, here are a few more uses for lemons:

  • Brush lemon juice on cut-up apples or avocados to keep them from turning brown.

  • Add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice for every quart of water when cooking rice. This produces a fluffier rice.

  • Soothe a scratchy throat by combining equal parts lemon juice and water. Gargle and repeat. This soothes the scratchiness and fights bacteria.

  • Whiten your fingernails by rubbing a wedge of lemon across them.

  • A dab of lemon juice on your skin tightens the pores and refreshes a tired face.

  • Lighten age spots with this quick, easy facial: combine juice of half a lemon with 1/8 cup organic sugar or 4 drops of honey, and apply in a circular motion. Let sit for a few minutes. Rinse off with a warm, wet washcloth.

  • Create a refreshing facial scrub by combining 2 tablespoons of honey, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1 tablespoon coconut oil (or olive oil) and 1 ½ tablespoons sea salt. Mix thoroughly. Apply this scrub to your face. Leave on for a few minutes and then rinse with cool water. This rub can also be used on your feet as part of a refreshing pedicure.

  • Start your day with a glass of lemon water. It’s amazing stuff for your body!  Just squeeze the juice from half a lemon into a glass of water. Here’s why:  it supports the immune system, repairs skin, reduces appetite, balances pH levels, cleanses the urinary tract, and freshens breath.  For more in-depth explanations on this and for even more lemon-related health tips, click here.

So, from now on when life hands you lemons…be happy!!
