Reviews

"Amid the countless how-to-invest guides that hit the market every year comes a straightforward primer that translates the jargon, breaks down the concepts, and provides advice neophytes can actually use. Finance blogger Horowitz presents basic information about investments and investment vehicles, various types of risk, economic trends, and kinds of investment analysis; he helps the reader first identify investment goals, then pursue the types of investments or further research necessary to create and maintain an appropriate portfolio. The final chapter addresses choosing a financial adviser, what questions to ask, and information on how you may be charged. Quick tips and Web site recommendations are sprinkled liberally throughout, with a glossary at the end. Beginning investors will find this no-nonsense manual a helpful resource to navigating the markets. (Jan.)"

An Investing Q&A with Andrew Horowitz

You devote a chapter in your book to leading, lagging, and coincident indicators. What are these indicators suggesting right now about the U.S. economy?

There is a debate raging about the true ability for economists to utilize traditional indicators in light of the extreme measures that governments are taking with monetary policy. That being said; it is clear that the most significant component of the lagging indicators is employment. Even while many of the leading indicators show that we are moving toward some growth, employment remains a sizable drag.

The last few years have seen incredible volatility in the financial markets. How can an average investor protect themselves in such tumultuous markets?

There are several ways in which to hedge a portfolio, although most investors never consider them. Whether it’s options, or inverse ETFs, there are excellent and relatively easy ways in which to manage downside risk. The main thing that investors are realizing is that the days of buy-and-hold may be over for some time. This is the perfect time to learn more about trends and protection measures.

Which financial ratios do you look at the closest when deciding to invest in a stock?

There are several options. While P/E is often used, I like PEG. Earnings growth, sales growth and Return on Equity are also high on the list. What’s important to remember, however, is that they need to be looked at in relation to other stocks within a similar industry.

Your book describes quantitative, fundamental, and technical analysis.  These are sophisticated tools. How can an average investor use them to make investment decisions?

Actually, they only sound sophisticated; I break them down for readers into simple to use processes.

In your years of counseling clients on their portfolios, what is the most common mistake you’ve seen investors make?

Not paying attention to signals and thinking that markets always move up. A big one is relying on hope, rather than having a plan of action.

Can an investor earn positive returns in any market conditions, even a sharp decline like we saw in 2008?

Absolutely! If you were watching the tape and looking at the economic indicators, it was rather clear that there was a fall coming. While it was hard to imagine that the decline would have been as severe as it was, there were several areas that were clearly going to get hurt. Shorting, hedging, and moving out of positions would have helped and potentially created profits.

We’ve seen two bubbles burst in the past decade.  What are the warning signs of a bubble? Do you see another one on the horizon?

There are many bubbles and the each has its own characteristics. Signs include parabolic moves without fundamental backing, as well as media over-hyping of the benefits. China real estate could be forming a bubble, as well as certain commodities. The Euro may not be a bubble exactly, but it looks like it could pop.

If a young investor just starting out in her career came to you with $10,000 to start an investment fund, what would you recommend she invest in?

I’d say a few solid ETFs or mutual funds. This will help to get her in the mode of investing so later she can branch out from there.

You’ve been a successful financial adviser for many years. How should someone go about selecting a financial adviser? Are there any sure-fire warning signs that indicate someone is a fraud?

Always make sure to get a good sense of who you are working with. Check out their history as well as their past run-ins with regulators. Hopefully, there will have been none. As for references, see what they have said over the years; if they have something in writing that provides a history of their insight, that’s all the better.

Who are some of the big-name investors that you admire? What have you learned from watching them?

Peter Lynch comes to mind as does Benjamin Graham. However, I like to remember to learn from the market itself, not just from one or two names that have done well.
