What Is the Proper Hostess Gift?

So, what is the proper gift to give to your host or hostess? Simply put, arrive with a gift that shows the utmost gratitude and kindness--despite what you personally may or may not like. By no means am I saying you have to show up with a bottle of Cristal or a $100 box of rare German chocolate. But a nice box of cookies from the local bakery will thank someone better than a package grabbed at the drug store. As I mentioned earlier, you’ll want to think about what your host might like. Do they love sweets? Bring over a box of gourmet candy you found at the mall. Do they like to cook? Grab a fancy marinade or jar of flavored salt from a store like Williams-Sonoma.

The gift you bring might depend on the party as well. If you’re going to a laid back Super Bowl party, a great tray of snacks is always a perfect choice. When showing up to a nice dinner party, grab a bottle of wine—a good go-to gift—and an extra special touch never hurts, so crack open the wallet and spend the additional $2 to buy a nice bag too. Even better would be to find a rare wine that the liquor store recommends--maybe something in season right now or one that just came out. Liquor stores are always getting new brands in and they can recommend the best for the party and your budget. A good hostess gift doesn’t have to break the bank. You can buy something nice—and thoughtful—without spending a fortune. After all, nice has no price tag.
