Porch Decorating Idea #3: Go Green

Now that you’ve pulled some of your interior decorating style out to your porch, it’s time to pull some of your landscaping style up there as well. If you want to add more permanent green to your porch area, look for window boxes and large planters. With these more permanent options, you can talk with a local landscaper to see if you can run irrigation to the planters so you don’t have to remember to water them each day.

If you want something with a little less commitment, you can check out your local hardware or discount store to find inexpensive planters to fit your style. Just remember to measure the space that you want to house these planters so you don’t have to make multiple trips to the store and back because you bought them too big or too small.

When deciding which plants you want to have at your front door, look for low maintenance plants that grow slowly. We made the mistake of putting in bougainvillea plants in our entryway. If you aren’t familiar with bougainvillea, they are pretty desert plants that bloom with beautiful flowers. Oh, and they grow like a weed, have massive branches that reach in every direction, have incredibly sharp thorns, and you can’t kill them even if you try. We’ve had several instances when we didn’t pay attention to the plants, only to find that they’ve suddenly blockaded our sidewalk. Don’t make this mistake at your house. Get plants that grow slowly, stay confined to a relatively small area, and can withstand the temperatures of your climate zone. You won’t regret it.

Porch Decorating Idea #4: Use Accent Colors

The final tip for dressing up your porch is to use paint to accent the features of your home. If you have shutters on the front of your house, consider painting them a contrasting color to stand out from the rest of your home. Or, paint the front door a fun color to make it pop. Not that daring? Try starting with your mail box or the backs of the stairs leading up to your front door. The great thing with paint is that, if you don’t like how it looks, you can always repaint it back the way it was, so don’t be afraid to try something new!
