Recently I extolled the virtues of text expansion in your word processor, email program, and most common desktop applications. For full details, see my article and Get-it-Done Guy episode here.  What I didn't mention was smartphones, because I didn't think text expansion was possible. But it is! Now I can have "GIDG" expand directly into “Get-it-Done Guy” even on my phone.

Here’s how to do it:

For Blackberry users – Go to Options > AutoText and enter text expansions.

For iPhone/iPod users running iOS 5 – Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Shortcuts.

For Android users – Text expansions don’t come built-in, but you can download the App "Smart Keyboard PRO" and it will let you set up text expansions easily. There's a free trial version called "Smart Keyboard Trial."

Type less, write more, and have a great new year!
