My recent episode Your Fall/Winter Home Maintenance Checklist has all the chores a homeowner needs to tackle before winter sets in. Getting your home ready for the winter weather is a time-consuming but necessary task. Once this checklist is done, why not sit back, relax, and enjoy your backyard, patio, or deck!

Here are a few changes I like to make to my outdoor space in preparation for autumn hang-outs:

  • Provide a heat source for those chilly fall evenings. If you have a fire pit, autumn is the perfect time to enjoy a crackling fire underneath the stars. Be sure to keep your wood pile close at hand. I like to have all the tools I need within arm’s reach, like matches, a poker, tongs, and skewers to roast marshmallows or hot dogs. If a fire pit is out of the question, you may want to purchase a patio heater. These handy sources of heat come in all sizes, shapes, and strengths, and usually run off a propane tank.

  • Autumn Activities

Speaking of marshmallows, if you’re using a fire pit, s’mores usually follow roasting those yummy, sticky orbs of sugar. I like to keep all my s’mores ingredients in a basket stored in the pantry. Once the fire starts, someone grabs the s’mores basket and the rest is delicious history! • Keep a basket of warm blankets and throws on the patio. Autumn nights can be unexpectedly chilly, so family and friends will definitely appreciate having something warm and fuzzy to wrap themselves in. It's easy to just plop a bunch of throws into a basket and could mean the difference between an enjoyable evening outdoors and having to bundle back inside with numb fingers.

  • Along with that basket of blankets, why not keep a bin of mittens, hats, and scarves handy? If enjoying your patio is an impromptu event, you may have guests who aren’t fully prepared for the cold. Offering some woolen warmth could be just the ticket for a great evening.

  • Create an inviting atmosphere in your outdoor space by adding a warm glow. Move a few small lamps to your outdoor seating area to create soft lighting. Hang a string of mini twinkle lights across a railing. Light some candles and scatter them around. Just the visual of warm, glowing light can help guests feel snug and comfortable.

  • Wrap your hands around a cup of warmth. Whether your favorite steaming cuppa is coffee, tea, hot chocolate, or spiced cider, sipping on a piping hot drink keeps you toasty from head to toe.  When hosting a larger group of guests, why not set up a hot chocolate and cider bar? Have fun mix-ins like mini marshmallows, peppermints, cinnamon, and flavored creamers or syrups.

  • For the adults, offer some peppermint schnapps, Irish cream, cinnamon schnapps, or (my favorite) Cinnabon vodka. It's sure to keep you warm all over!

Try these tips when the weather turns chilly and enjoy your outdoor space with plenty of warmth, light, and cheer!
