Episode #74

...we take it as a compliment when our friends fight over who gets to sit on the squishy couch during parties. And Mr. Domestic CEO jokes that I can never banish him to the couch because he already loves to sleep on it and spends a few nights a month on it just for fun. Yes, our couch is that comfortable.

Tip #2: Determine the Size of Your Couch

The next factor that you need to consider is the size of your couch. The first, most obvious question about the size of the couch is: How big is the room? A 10-foot by 10-foot room needs a much smaller couch than a 15-foot by 20-foot room. A big couch can make a smaller room feel cramped, and a small couch in a large room can look like you're using kiddy furniture.

If you aren’t sure how big of a couch you should buy for your room, find the dimensions of a few couches that you like. Then, using a tape measure and a roll of masking tape, measure and tape off the size of the couch on your floor. Walk around the tape shape and see if you have enough room to move. Does your tape square look puny along the big wall? It’s much easier to change the size of your tape than it is to get a couch into your home only to realize that it doesn’t fit. Spend time figuring out how big the couch should be for your space.

The other, less obvious question to ask about the size of the couch is: How big are the people who are going to use it? When we were searching for our perfect couch, my husband’s one requirement was that he would be able to stretch out his long legs. Mr. Domestic CEO is 6’2” and has a pet peeve of having his feet hang off the end of a couch. This meant that we needed to get a couch that had at least 74” of cushions. Our couch is just over 7 feet long, so plenty of room for the Mr. to spread out. Luckily, it’s in a large family room, so it works for the room and the husband. Win-win!

Tip #3: Determine the Fabric of Your Couch

The next thing to consider when looking for the perfect couch for your home is which fabric the couch needs to have. If you have children, pets, or are just a little klutzy, these are all important factors to consider when picking the fabric for your couch. Leather, and even faux leather, is incredibly easy to wipe clean. Just make sure a real leather couch is treated with a stain protector from the factory, and then maintain that protection over the years.

A fabric couch isn’t quite as easy to wipe clean, but you can also get a couch with a slipcover that you can remove a few times a year and toss into the washer. This is especially easy if you get a slipcover made of microfiber. Consider how often things are going to be spilled or dripped to help you determine which fabric or covering you want for your dream couch.

Luckily for us, I already had my fabric picked out before we even started looking for couches. Unfortunately for us, I was stuck on one specific fabric. I absolutely wanted what I refer to as “teddy bear fabric.” Having a very specific fabric in mind did highly limit the selection of couches that we could choose from. As you search for your perfect couch, I would advise keeping an open mind on the exact fabric and even color until you find the style of couch you want. As long as you have a general idea of the fabric you need, you can find lots more options and figure out the details along the way.

Tip #4: Test Out a LOT of Couches

My final piece of advice is to window shop and test out a lot of couches before committing to one. It’s likely that your couch is going to be one of the main focal pieces in a room where you and your friends and family spend a lot of time. Take your time in making this decision. Go to a few stores each weekend and take notes and photos of the couches that you like at each one.

After a few weekends, go back to the stores that had your favorites. Eventually you will find that you are being drawn to a particular couch. As long as it’s in your budget, that’s the couch for you. If it’s outside your budget, search on Craigslist, eBay, or at consignment stores for your dream couch at a lower price. Even if you don’t find the exact couch, you may be able to find a knock-off or one that is close enough.

The fact that our super comfy, squishy, modern, extra-long couch actually has teddy bear fabric is proof that if you look around long enough, you will find the perfect couch for your home.
