5 Reasons Why You Need Internet Access When Traveling

Traveling may be one of the best occasions to do a detox from social media and simply enjoy yourself, but it has become quite difficult to stay apart from your smartphone, right? According to Statista, the most popular apps are still Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok when it comes to sharing pictures, getting in touch with others, and finding entertaining content, and experts estimate 2026 will be the year we will reach 5.75 billion users on social networking sites, so it’s no wonder they’re getting more addictive.

So, it’s difficult to get off your phone even when you’re supposed to relax and forget about the world, and you decide to cut it off. Unfortunately, not even this is a suitable option since you need to access the internet, and even social media at times, for various reasons, so don’t skip the necessities when traveling, only because you think you’re better off like this. That’s why we will show you the reasons for internet access and reveal some tips on how to disconnect at times.

You will feel safer as a solo traveler

Traveling solo can be more fun if you’re the type of adventurer who likes to try everything when going abroad, even if these activities can be dangerous, such as hiking at night or getting to remote areas. If you’ve seen the movie “127 Hours”, you know what we’re talking about: telling someone where you go and being connected to a phone device can save your life sometimes.

Therefore, make sure to always have at least one device you can rely on for communication and asking for help when needed, and it would be ideal to equip it with unlimited data and fast internet to be safer. This means using recent maps to safely explore places or even using a translator to talk to locals. You don’t have to explore enormous canyons in Utah, like the protagonist of the movie, to be in danger; you can simply stroll around a gorge in NZ and still need a source of internet, like the Holafly eSIM for New Zealand that is compatible with most smartphone brands and offers coverage pretty well anywhere.

You will improve your culinary experience

You might have experienced tummy trouble at least once during a trip somewhere, and this is a normal occurrence when your eating schedules change, the time zone is different, and your regular rhythm is all over the place. So, digestive woes happen, and you can only sit in the hotel room and wait for them to pass.

This can also be the cause for a lack of research on restaurants, especially when your stomach tends to be sensitive when switching to another country’s cuisine. Usually, the rule of thumb is avoiding raw foods since they are most likely to cause trouble, and eating meals that are cooked for longer to ensure you benefit from their nutritious value while also avoiding getting sick. However, you wouldn’t know which restaurants offer the safest foods without an internet connection, right? So, spend as much time researching restaurants and the local cuisine to understand how cooking is done and avoid tummy issues.

You can keep up with friends and family

We know that sometimes the thrill of traveling comes right from doing it alone without many people knowing, as you feel free to do what you want and truly experience the nomadic life. However, keeping your family and friends worried for long times surely isn’t pleasant, and soon they’ll start nagging you about giving up traveling since doing it anonymously can be dangerous.

This doesn’t mean you have to talk to everyone necessarily; you can choose a trustworthy person and keep them updated daily or several times a day so they can track your progress and be able to call for help in the event of something happening to you. Moreover, this can help with homesickness as well, which kicks in right when you’re not ready and can bring your mood down when being away from home for weeks or months.

You will be updated on the latest news

Traveling and having fun can make you forget about the state of the world, and considering the international tensions that have been occurring in the past months, being connected to the internet and the entire world is truly necessary to avoid being trapped in a country. This doesn’t necessarily mean to read local news, as they might be difficult to digest when you’re abroad, but you should still check your usual sources of news to find out about any potential regulation changes, adjustments in the traveling law, or anything that could interfere with your trip.

You can also try collaborating with a travel agency, since they can help manage disruptions in the case of your flight getting delayed or cancelled. At the same time, the agent might be able to save not only your funds but also your time on the way back home.

You will save money

When you have access to the internet, you have the power to make the best decisions in a vast array of tasks. Starting from sourcing the internet, you can buy a digital SIM that’s more affordable and efficient than a local one, saving money and avoiding stress from not being able to install the physical SIM properly.

You can also save money by buying food from the nearest local store instead of going to the restaurant because you found some coupons on an online app, as well as access free amenities when you’re updated with the social media pages of shops, restaurants, or businesses in the area you’ve traveled in.

Conclusion

Whether you’re a fan of social media and the news or not, you should use your internet connection to be on top of the latest news and benefit from various perks of social media. Moreover, you must tell your family members and friends of your adventures, especially when going solo traveling, so they will have peace of mind and be able to help in the case of an emergency.
