I had a college professor who used to say, “Clothes make the man.” Although the saying is cliché, he definitely lived it, always coming to class dapper and dressed to the nines. Of course, clothes don’t really make up who you are, but we can’t deny the importance of first impressions. It’s a part of nature that is as undeniable as it is shallow.

When you meet someone for the first time, it's best to present yourself as who you really are. Sure, you can buy something nice for the occasion, but don’t go out and drop a thousand dollars on something you’ll never wear again. Your outfit should shows your style, attitude, and personality. I say this with one caveat: If you’re into Star Trek, don’t (I mean DON’T!) wear your vintage Captain Kirk uniform. Bad move. Dress to show who you are, whether it’s stylish, laid back, or just comfortable.

Bottom line: Don’t start off a first date with a fake image of who you are trying to be. Be yourself and let your personality be your biggest advantage.
